Some commonly used jointed reinforced concrete pavements on national highways in cold, snowy Hokkaido have been reported to be in service in a relatively sound condition for nearly 30 years. However, cracks, potholes, and other damage to the pavement surface, as well as damage along the joints, have been observed recently in jointed reinforced concrete pavements that have been in service for long periods. This paper reports on field investigations into the causal factors of damage to concrete pavements that have been in service for long periods. It also reports a case study of test construction using stainless steel dowel-bar and omission of steel mesh to clarify measures against distress of jointed reinforced concrete pavements.
