Abstract

The effects of significant duration of strong ground motions on structural responses were studied. This study analyzed nonlinear response of a single degree-of-freedom system using more than 40,000 waves having the similar acceleration response spectrum with different duration. The results showed that the duration of the waves was insignificant to the maximum acceleration and displacement response of the structures, however, the displacement responses vary widely according to the input waves regardless of the strong ground motion durations. On the contrary, absorbed hysteretic energy was influenced by the significant ground motion duration.
