The essential requirements for the protection of structures in mountainous areas against rockfalls have led to the development of various types of protection fences. This study verified the effect of wire mesh laying length and loading position on the capture performance of energy absorbing rock fall protection fences with a fence height of 2 m and length of 15 m by actual scale impact test. The test data including displacement, impact force, absorbing energy, and rope tensile force were measured and compared with different experimental cases. From the experimental results, it was found that this protection fence can capture rockfalls with energy of up to 106 kJ even under the conditions of impact speed V = 25 m/s described in the current rockfall countermeasure handbook.
