The health monitoring technique of composite bolted joints is currently being developed by means of the strain distribution measurement using optical fiber sensor. This study proposed a finite element model to simulate the strain distribution after the damage initiation in bearing failure of CFRP bolted joints, and investigated the relationship between the damage state and the strain distribution. The finite element model was constructed by extending our previous model of the bearing failure in CFRP bolted joints. In this model, the damage in 0° and ±45° plies in the laminate is addressed by the progressive damage model and the plastic deformation is simulated in 90° plies. The simulated results of the plastic strain in fiber direction in 90° ply during the damage evolution revealed a strong correlation between the plastic strain distribution and the damage area of the fiber kinking in 0° ply. These results confirmed the measurement results by Minakuchi et al., demonstrating that the kinking damage area in 0° ply could be evaluated by measuring the residual strain distribution.
