This paper treats the strength optimization of laminated composites under in-plane loads. Tsai-Wu criterion is used for determining a first-ply-failure strength. The optimal laminate configuration to maximize the in-plane strength is examined based upon a simple nature of Tsai-Wu criterion on CFRP composites. The laminate configuration where all layers fail simultaneously is discussed and compared with the optimal laminate configuration. A method is also presented for minimum weight design of the laminates with predetermined fiber directions.
