A simplified method of calculating mode I component of the energy release rate associated with the free-edge delamination crack growth in the anisotropic composite laminate is proposed. The method is based on the J-integral type conservation laws in combination with the simplified method formerly developed by the authors to calculate the asymptotic value of the total energy release rate for large delamination crack length. Numerical results are compared with those from the finite element analysis for laminates with several stacking sequences. Although the accuracy of the calculation scheme depends mainly upon the reference state of the quasimode I delamination used, the present method is still useful for the primary design survey for the delaminations of composite laminates.
