Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between the actual view against Zenkoji Temple's facilities and the potential view against the mountains from Zenkoji Omote-sando. On the basis of the findings, I suggested three characteristics of views in Zenkoji monzen-machi: an individual can see 1) the lower temple's facilities, especially Nioh-mon Gate, rather than the mountains from Zenkoji Omote-sando between Shinden-cho Xpt and Daimon Minami Xpt; 2) the higher Zenkoji Temple's facilities, especially Nioh-mon Gate, for example, the mountains from Zenkoji Omote-sando between Daimon Minami Xpt and Zenkoji Temple Xpt; and 3) the higher temple's facilities rather than the mountains from Zenkoji Omote-sando between Zenkoji Temple Xpt and Hon-doh Hall. In summary, regarding the relationship between the actual view against Zenkoji Temple's facilities and the potential view against the mountains in Zenkoji Omote-sando, I identified that the view has changed in each of the three areas between Shinden-cho Xpt and Daimon Minami Xpt, Daimon Minami Xpt and Zenkoji Temple Xpt, and Zenkoji Temple Xpt and Hon-doh Hall.
