Abstract

Digitized data of regional newspapers published prior to the introduction of digital typesetting has not been publicly available or utilized in compared to those in Europe and the US. However, in view of the progress of deterioration of old newspaper copes, and the importance of roles in regional paper in the region, digitization of past local newspapers is critical for overall digital content development and digital archive construction in Japan. With cooperation of Nippon Shimbun Kyokai (The Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association), the authors conducted a questionnaire survey on digitalization from February to May 2017 to 73 regional newspaper companies affiliated to the association with the recovery rate of 64.4%. In this paper, we report on the outline of the survey results, and discuss problems and challenges, etc concerning digitization and distribution of local newspapers.
