Abstract
To investigate energy balance and diet control, the oral energy intake, energy intake from the peritoneal dialysate, energy loss due to protein or fat loss into the peritoneal dialysate and energy consumption using Kenz Calorie Counter were measured in CAPD patients. CAPD patients consumed less energy than healthy volunteers (p<0.01). However, there was a high correlation between energy balance and weight change (r=0.80, p<0.01). To our surprise, the level of energy consumption in CAPD patients was far different from the level they had expected.
Our results indicated that the balance of energy intake and consumption including intake from the peritoneal dialysate must be considered for adequate diet control for CAPD patients.
