Abstract

The Graduate School of Engineering, Utsunomiya University introduced a PBL program for Master’ s Degree course students in 2008. A team consists of four to six students from different departments, thus, they have different technical backgrounds. They are expected to exercise skills and apply their specialized knowledge to the problem of their own choice, regardless of their major subjects in their departments. Senior engineers from various industries act as technical advisers for students, and give advices and comments on the progress and management of the project and the student team. In this program students are organized into groups of six students from different major fields, and are expected to find a technical or social challenge to solve, and declare a project on it. The program is effective to cultivate students motivation and leadership, and to give opportunities to experience to exercise problem-finding and problem-solving skills.
