In previous research, we recorded videos of in-person classroom lectures and added various functions to our system that facilitated supplementary learning and review by students. However, in the 2020 academic year, the spread of COVID-19 led to many lectures being delivered online, and so we updated our system to allow for online learning and made extensive improvements to the system’s user interface. Delivering lectures with this system revealed that students frequently used the system and evaluated its utility to be equal to or better than in-person lectures. However, we found that students with poor grades had difficulty establishing a learning rhythm in asynchronous online learning, and thus we consider there to be a need for investigating ways to establish such rhythms, such as by setting deadlines for submitting reports.
