We proposed a method for detecting short-circuit fault BPDs contained in PV arrays using partial shadows that move with the movement of the sun. If the partial shadow is on a module with a normal BPD, the I-V curve has a step; if the partial shadow is on a module with a short-circuit fault BPD, the I-V curve has no step. We experimented with an actual short-circuit fault BPD and found that the short-circuit fault BPD can be detected from the relationship between the location of the partial shadow on PV array and the maximum power point power or maximum power point current. The proposed method using movement of the sun can reduce the risk of workers falling and receiving electric shocks.
