Abstract
To improve the screening rate for gastric cancer, we identified those subjects who should be particularly encouraged to undergo screening based on sex, age, and screening intervals. We examined 581,888 patients who underwent screening for gastric cancer at this hospital. The incidence of gastric cancer was calculated and analyzed according to sex (male and female), age (40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 to 74), and screening intervals [one year ago (group 1), two years ago (group 2), three years ago (group 3), and the first time to undergo screening or four years ago or more (group 4)]. Persons who should be particularly encouraged to undergo screening are those in group 4 for both sexes, excluding men aged between 40 and 49, and those in group 3 for both sexes and aged between 60 and 69. More specifically, older rather than younger persons, and men rather than women, with an upper age limit of 69, should be encouraged to undergo screening, considering coordination with occupational health services. Our study aims include improving the efficacy and efficiency of screening with limited budgets and human resources as one of the temporary measures to promote annual screening.
