Abstract
A short, hands-on instructional program is considered effective as an introduction to large-scale STEAM education programs. However, such programs are rarely utilized in Japan. In this study, we developed a relatively small program, about 120 minutes long, focusing on optical illusions. In this program, students learn the rules of one geometric illusion called the Café Wall illusion, including the relationship between the early processing mechanism of the human visual system and its computational model. Second, students apply the learned rules to create threedimensional patterns causing optical illusions. In this paper, we showed the basic features of the program. We also show that the program can be implemented in a relatively short time and is suitable for practical teaching in high schools.
