Abstract
This paper analyzes paintings of “purisme” proposed by Ozenf ant-Jeanneret and Severini who wrote“Du Cubisme au Classicisme”. The standpoints of this analysis are 1) elements which compose their paintings, 2) the proportion of sides of paintings (canvas), and 3) applicated diagrams of geometrical figures. The conclusions are the followings. 1) Their elements of still lifes are similar, and Ozenf ant-Jeanneret composed the elements with a hieralchical structure (lignes, surfaces, volumes), but Sévérini proposed lignes and angles with implied relations to volumes. 2) Ozenfant-Jeanneret uses F canvas with the approximate ratio of 1: √3/2. Severini uses M or P canvas with approximate rations of 2: 3, 3: 5, and 1: √2.3) As diagrams regulating compositions, Ozenfant-Jeanneret use regular triangles. Severini uses right angled triangles difined by the ratio of sides by used canvas. 4) The correspondence of elements to the diagram is impliee in Ozenfant-Jeanneret, but explicite in Severini.
