Abstract
We surveyed the situation of smoking bans in psychiatric hospitals throughout Japan and studied the related factors to promote it and obstacles. We randomly selected 239 facilities from Japan Psychiatric Hospitals Associationʼs member facilities (1,210 facilities total), and mailed questionnaires to the directors of nursing of each facilities. We received valid response from 142 facilities and response rate was 59.4%. Of those, 70 facilities (49.3%) allowed to smoke in the smoking areas of the all wards, and 24 facilities (16.9%) allowed in the restricted wards. Twenty-four facilities (16.9%) prohibited from smoking in the hospital buildings, and 22 facilities (15.5%) completely prohibited in any site of the hospital. We revealed the Health Promotion Law, the prevention of passive smoking and leaderships of the hospital administrators would affect the smoking bans in psychiatric hospitals.
