In this article, the fundamentals of shock compression are described together with the recent progress. It was compared with what the classic Hugoniot relation tells us and addressed the unique characteristic features of shock compression technique. Shock compression process includes ultrafast strain rate compression as the shock front, steady high pressure and high temperature state for a limited time (Hugoniot state for ns to μs in laboratory), and isentropic release from the Hugoniot through high residual temperature to ambient condition. Shock experiments enable us to investigate the properties of iron under the Earh core conditions directly.
