In this paper are proposed the freshening process and a method of estimating the final salinity of a standard fresh-water lake from the standpoint of practical designing. The freshening of lakes is related to a number of factors. A standard great volume fresh-water lake the bottom of which is deeper than the height of the sill of an outlet gate was taken up as a subject with a view to obtaining a general solution. The freshening process consists of three kinds of hydraulic mechanisms comprising convective freshening in an upper layer, the vertical diffusion of salinity through a spring layer and the mixing of salinity through the bottom soil of a lake. Jansen's formula took the first mechanism into consideration with no regard paid to the latter two mechanisms. The present author has proposed a more general method in which all the freshening mechanisms are taken into consideration for better application to a standard lake. This analytical method was applied to a project of freshening Jusan-ko and Serako Lakes.
