Histological specimens of synovial tissue from patients with rheumatoid arthritis were examined before and after low-dosage laser therapy. Marked fibrotic changes and a decreased lymphocytic infiltration at the sublining layer were observed in patients who had been subjected to long-term laser irradiation. These changes were not observed in patients who had been irradiated for shorter periods. These results suggest that laser irradiation may be of therapeutic value for chronic inflammation of rheumatoid synovium, when administered in the proper dosage.
