Abstract
CO2 LASER has been widely used for the treatment of benign and malignant tumors in the head and neck area. The LASER provides excellent hemorrhage control by sealing the capillaries. The simultaneous use of CO2 LASER and Nd-YAG LASER gives even better hemorrhage control. The LASER method of treatment also results in the minimal dissemination of cancer cells improving long term outcome. Survival rate as of April 1985 is 24/27 (89%) and all of the living patients are tumor free histologically. Two patients died of early generalized metastasis after total laryngectomy. One of them died of generalized carcinomatosis, apparently related to the original tumor. For T2 cases and T3 cases required total laryngectomy in spite of through irradiation by LASER. One Tlb case had incomplete removal of tumor resulting in recurrence, which was controlled satisfactorily by external X-ray radiation.
