There are varying forms of communication between the two umbilical arteries. The author investigated this communication on a total of 118 placenta by making corrosion anatomical preparations. This communication was absolutely absent in only 1.7±1.19%. There are two major types in varying forms of the communication of umbilical arteries, namely, one is by communication branches and the other is by the union of two arteries.
Communication by the branch type is seen in 80.2±3.70%, while that by union type is seen 19.8±3.70%.
The length of comunication branches is from 2 to 22 mm being considerably different from that of union which was from 2 to 35 mm.
The first branch of umbilical artery prior to communication was found only in 13.8±3.20%.
Umbilical arteries run from the left side passing through in front of the umbilical venus to the right side and those running from the right to left are relatively few.
