Among 1306 patients admitted to our Department of Medicine during the last 3 years, 211 patients had anemia (15%) . Only 15% of these patients with anemia had primary anemia, while others had secondary anemia.
Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, leukemia, malignant tumor, liver disease and kidney disease were frequently associated with anemia. In a proportion of 1 to 4 patients with anemia above the age of 50, either malignant tumor or leukemia was responsible for anemia.
The rate of occurrence of anemia was the highest in leukemia, 87.5%, followed by chronic nephritis, 41.8%, liver cirrhosis, 40.0%, and malignant tumor, 28.6%. In leukemia intense anemia was frequently seen in acute leukemia. In chronic nephritis, intense anemia was seen in all patients with urea nitrogen above 100 mg/dl. In liver cirrhosis, no particular relationship was noted between liver function and anemia.
