A case of double carcinoma of the esophagus and lung was reported with review of the Japanese literature. This case was a synchronous double carcinoma and was statisfied with criteria of Warren & Gates. A literature survey was carried out on five clinical cases and fifteen autopsy cases with such double carcinoma of the esophagus and lung reported in Japan. About them, the characteristics, problems of surgical treatment and so on were discussed.
The patient was a man, aged 74 years and was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of vomiting. The X-ray and endoscopy of the esophagus revealed a elevated lesion of the middle thoracic esophagus. Biopsy specimens were taken from the lesion and were diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. The chest X-ray showed a round nodular shadow in the upper lobe of the right lung and we suspected a carcinoma of the lung. The esophageal carcinoma was resected radically and the lung tumor (histological finding : lung carcinoma) was treated with a conservative resection.
The pathological findings of these resected specimens were presented as follows ;
(1) The esophageal tumor was a elevated lesion, measuring 4.0 × 3.5 × 3.0 cm in size. Histologically, it showed adenoacanthoma, sm (depth of invasion) and stage 0 carcinoma (histological stage), so called early carcinoma of the esophagus.
(2) The lung tumor was a round and localized lesion, measuring 5.0 × 5.0 × 4.0 cm in size and histologically bronchiole-alveolar carcinoma.
