Abstract
A clinico-statistical survey was carried out on 184 cleft lip patients (unilateral 139, bilateral: 45) who had undergone the primary operation by Onizuka's method at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, School of Medicine, Showa University during the 3, 5-year period from April, 1980 to September, 1983.
1. Keloid formation was seen on 37 cases (26.6%) of unilateral cleft lip, 6 cases (13.3%) on first and 21 cases (46.7%) . on second operations of bilateral cleft lip.
2. Keloid formation was found more on right unilateral cleft lip than on the left.
3. Keloid formation was found more on the incomplete unilateral cleft than lip the complete type.
4. It showed high percentage of much more severe and serious keloid formation on cleft lip in conjunction with cleft palate. One of the factors for its cause is the nasal escape of food, etc.
5. There was no difference between male and female on the ratio of keloid formation.
6. We evaluated the effect of radiation therapy on cleft lip patients who had primary repair, and found that it was not effective to prevent the keloid formation from the primary repair of cleft lip.
