In the retina, cones and rods are forming a distinctive spatial arrangement called photoreceptor mosaic. The cones are concentrated in the fovea and the cone density decreases with distance from the fovea, while the cone diameter increases. Outside the fovea, the rod density increases keeping almost the same diameter. In order to elucidate the influence of these spatial characteristics on the visual information processing, we propose a method for automatic generation of a realistic photoreceptor mosaic based on the anatomical characteristics. As a result, we have succeeded in generating a photoreceptor mosaic model which reproduced photoreceptor density, cone diameter, and LMS ratio.
