Abstract
Electrodes for temporary cardiac pacing are used to monitor and suppress arrhythmia. The present clip-on electrodes are reliably fixed on the heart but make injuries on the heart. Development of noninvasive temporary pacing electrodes is an approach to solve this problem. In this study, a flexible electrode composed of polymer film and adhesive conductive gel for stable contact to the heart is fabricated. A flexible electrode consisted of 50-μm-thick polyimide film as a substrate, 50-nm-thick gold or platinum on a substrate as a pair of conductive paths and terminals, and 0.5-μm-thick palyrene film as an insulating layer. The gel was composed by saline, polyvinyl alcohol (10wt%) as an adhesive agent, and sodium polyacrylate (5wt%) as a gelling agent. Adhesive resistance of this gel reached 0.7N which was almost equal to that of a representative commercial solid paste. We measured ECG of a goat using this device. The wave-form demonstrating 96 peaks per minute was obtained.
