Physical examinations of functional gastrointestinal diseases have been performed. However it is difficult to carry out these simple and noninvasive examinations. It is well known that the intestinal motility is caused by the constriction and relaxation of smooth muscle cells caused by electrical activity. A measurement of electrical activity is expected as examination system, which can non-invasively evaluate the intestinal motility function. However the relationship has not been examined and not clear. In this study, we focus attention on the sigmoid colon that is relatively close to body surface and, investigate whether the motility can be evaluated from body surface potential estimated through the computer simulation on the relationship between electrical activity and the motility of sigmoid colon. The computer simulation was carried out based on electrical activity in the motility estimated by the electrical dipole model. Furthermore we estimated the body surface potential obtained from electrical activity of sigmoid colon and investigate appropriate electrode placement for accurately measuring electrical activity in the motility of sigmoid colon on body surface.
