We utilized a CITREX H5 flow analyzer to examine the differences in leak compensation between volume control ventilation (VCV) and pressure control ventilation (PCV) for ten ventilators (five types) using a lung model. The leak points were compared between the flow analyzer and model the lung (ventilator-side), and between the respirator and the CITREX analyzer (patient-side). The amount of change in inspiratory tidal volume for VCV and PCV between the patient-side and no-leak conditions (median [25th-75th percentile]) were -194 (-217, -26) mL and 0 (-1, 6) mL, respectively, and the amount of leakage (i.e., difference between ventilator-side and patient-side conditions) were 573 (543, 583) mL and 522 (520, 533) mL, respectively. The amount of correction (i.e., difference for VCV and PCV between ventilator-side and no-leak conditions) were 360 (339, 545) mL and 526 (520, 534) mL, respectively. Thus, there is a large difference in leak compensation between the ventilators in VCV.
