This study aims at developing a tool whichcan analyze and illustrate changes in superiority of waste treatmenttechnologies in line with changes in socio-economic factors. First, wedeveloped formulae of net present values (NPVs) for incineration withelectricity generation, composting, landfilling with methane gas electricitygeneration, and landfilling without electricity generation. Then, we applieddata in Thailand to the formulae of NPVs. In our study, we selected land purchasecost (L) and electricity price (P) as two main socio-economic factors that arechanged by development of the country and affect the selection of wastetreatment technologies, and used them as valuables in the analysis. Finally, the NPVs for different waste treatment technologies with L and P were comparedpairwise, and conditions where a waste treatment technology is superior toanother were presented in a graph. The result clearly indicates conditions(area) where a certain waste treatment technology is the best in terms of NPV.By using this model, historical changes of waste treatment technologies couldbe more visually explained for policy makers. We have analyzed the case ofThailand with this model, but application of this model to other developingcountries is also expected in future studies.
