Metropolitan cities in developing countries that featured rivers flowing through them often need to face riverine issues, including waste management in the riverside community. Jakarta City, Indonesia, for example, is intersected by multiple rivers, including the infamous Ciliwung River, which poses risks to thousands of households living along its banks. Kampung Melayu Subdistrict, the third most densely populated subdistrict in Jakarta with over 30,000 inhabitants, serves as an important case study for understanding waste management challenges in riverside communities. This research study was conducted in its riverside community to present a comprehensive waste flow analysis by employing a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. Three segments of the waste flow analysis (river waste, in-land waste, recyclable materials) picturized the generation patterns, recovery, and existing management practices. It was found that 23% of the generated waste leaks into the environment, either staying on land or into the river. This waste flow analysis with the integration of both qualitative and quantitative approaches was found to provide valuable insights into the general waste flow in riverside communities. This research also found that uncertainty of illegally dumped waste amount, including river waste, calls for further verifying analysis.
