As an example of singularity in shells, a thin cylindrical shell subjected to a radial concentrated load with both ends supported is discussed. For a cylindrical shell under a concentrated load, not only the singularity itself but also the whole deformation is important. Based on K. Mizoguchi's equation, the solutions are obtained by applying double Fourier transforms. The series, however, are not suitable for explaining the singularity at the point of application of the load. Therefore we transform them to obtain a set of series which converges uniformly and a closed form representing the singularity. The study shows such interesting results that in the vicinity of the load in the circumferential direction the cylinder deforms outwards and gives rise to tensile stress on its surface. These results may be applied to such a machine as a rotary kiln which will possibly suffer fatigue failure by alternated stress due to such deformations.
