An experimental identification technique by using transfer functions is developed. The technique requires neither application of the excitation on nor measurement at the boundary. The technique can treat the nonlinear boundary conditions. The first step in the proposed technique is to measure transfer functions of the unset structure. The second step is to replace the boundaries by springs and dampers as well as equivalent masses and moments of inertia. The third step is to apply the periodic excitation and measure steady state responses except boundaries. The last step is to determine the characteristics of the boundary elements by applying the principle of harmonic balance. Numerical simulation is conducted, and applicability of the technique is confirmed.
