This paper deals with the cutting assessment method of machine tool dynamic characteristic. A quantitative method for the limiting cutting width of machine tool by weak mode analysis is proposed. First, shortcomings of the current excitation method and cutting method are discussed. Next, solution of the limiting cutting width is derived from dynamic characteristics of machine tool structure and cutting process. Then, an experiment is carried out and the computational result discussed. The proposed method is robust in theoretical basis and easy for practical use.
