Abstract
The frontal impact accident is the main pattern of car accidents, and the measures of protecting an occupant is needed. The maximum chest decelaration of an occupant is the important evaluation index of injury, and it depends on the time history of car decelaration. In a case that the initial kinetic energy and maximum car deformation are constant, experiences show that the high decelaration of the car in the early stage yields protection of the occupant. This study shows the relationship between the stiffness of car and the occupant decelaration with one-dimensional two-mass model, and it is experimentally verified.
