Abstract
Nonlinear vibrations of elastic structures carrying two cylindrical tanks partially filled with liquid is investigated when the structure is subjected to horizontal harmonic excitation. When a ratio 1:1:1 of the tuning condition is satisfied between the natural frequencies of the structure and sloshing in the liquid tanks, modal equations are derived considering the nonlinearities of the hydrodynamic forces. Then, van der Pol's method is employed to determine frequency response curves. The numerical results show that whirling motion and translation motion of the structure appear depending on the swirl motion of sloshing in two tanks in the same and opposite directions, respectively. They include the vibrations at constant and modulated amplitudes. The validity of the theoretical results was confirmed by the experiments.
