Squeal is often generated in car disk brakes. There are several kinds of squeals, called high frequency squeal and low frequency squeal. Both squeals are distinguished by their squeal frequency range and their vibration mode. The high frequency squeal is the coupled vibration between the pads and the rotor, and low frequency squeal is the coupled vibration between the caliper and the rotor. Recently, new kind of car disk brake squeal which is in-plane vibration in the direction of the rotor surface becomes a serious problem in this field. Several investigations were conducted to analyze the mechanisms of the in-plane squeal. However, the mechanism of in-plane squeal has not been clarified, yet. In this paper, several experiments and theoretical analyses using simple three degree-of-freedom system were conducted to analyze the mechanism of the in-plane squeal.
