Abstract
This paper investigated a damping effect of wedge-shaped dampers for various attachment positions and areas of vibration damping material, to address a design method of vibration damping material which is suitable for wedge-shaped dampers. A wedge-shaped beam is a one of the one-dimensional non-uniform structure which has variable cross-sectional area such that the thickness of the structure is proportional to second power law of the position. A wedge-shaped damper is then the wedge-shaped beam with vibration damping material on the tip of the beam. Therefore the damping effect of wedge-shaped dampers may be influenced by the vibration mode of an original wedge-shaped beam. This paper evaluated the damping effect of the dampers by the viewpoint of vibration mode of the beam. Experimental results showed that the design method of the dampers based on the vibration mode of an original wedge-shaped beam itself was not always suitable for this kind of damper.
