BTA(boring trepanning association) deep hole drilling is widely used for producing deep holes with high aspect ratio. Since the cutting chips are discharged together with the cutting oil through the boring bar, the finished surface becomes smooth. However, self-excited vibration, called rifling mark, occurs during the operation. Then finished surface of the rifling mark is polygon. When a rifling mark occurs, various problems such as deterioration of product precision and reduction of tool life occur. This phenomenon is called pattern formation, and the similar phenomena occurs in drilling, reaming and lathe turning. In the case of BTA deep hole drilling, it is very difficult to detect the occurrence of rifling mark in the early stage, because the BTA tool locates deeply inside the work. In this paper, the detection method of the rifling mark in BTA deep hole drilling process is discussed.
