Gear noise and vibration are coming under spotlight with the increase of requirement for farther noise and vibration reduction of machines. Plastic gears are proposed as one of the answers for it. Plastic gears are based on so called engineering plastics and efficient in weight, lublicity and cost compared with steel gears. On the other hand, they have less mechanical stiffness and high expansion rate for temperature. Because of those characteristics, simple replacement of steel gear to plastic gear may cause serious problems. The deflection of plastic gear teeth under load is fairly greater than that of steel gear and it yield equivalent gear surface error. Especially when steel gear and plastic gear are meshed each other, it is known peculiar vibration appears. This paper overviews general characteristics of plastic gear and discusses the vibration caused by meshing of different base materials.
