Vibration reduction methods using control technologies have been studied to improve vertical ride comfort of railway vehicles. Most of them were intended to reduce vibrations of the first-bending-mode of the carbody around 10 Hz or the rigid body mode of the carbody around 1 Hz. Specifically, secondary suspension or active mass dampers were controlled using the carbody accelerations or the primary suspension using the bogie accelerations. If vibration is reduced by these methods, even better ride quality can be achieved by reducing vibration in other frequency bands. This paper proposes a new method for reducing vertical carbody vibrations in railway vehicles, which is to control the secondary suspension using vertical accelerations of the bogie flame. Actual vehicle running simulations were carried out, using a 14-DOF model considering the vertical and longitudinal dynamics of the vehicle, and vehicle specifications and excitation conditions corresponding to those of a Shinkansen. This paper reports that the proposed method is effective in reducing vertical carbody vibrations mainly in the 2-8 Hz range of the car body by simulation results.
