Mold clamping units are an important structural and mechanical part of injection-molding machines. Obtaining good mold clamping unit design solutions requires the solution of two main design optimization problems, for the plate shape and toggle mechanism. These two optimization problems are strongly interrelated but cannot ordinarily be solved simultaneously, since they lie in different design disciplines and employ different software tools. The use of integrated system optimization techniques, however, can achieve optimal design solutions for the complete mold clamping unit, and this research proposes just such an effective design optimization method. The proposed method involves a hierarchical procedure where two design optimization problems are first solved separately, and then, using the two results as starting points, a system level optimization that considers design criteria for the entire mold clamping unit is carried out.
