With the maturation of consumer demands, Kansei design has been becoming an important issue for product designs in addition to function and structural performances. In this work, we studied the structural optimization method involving the Kansei design for a road-bicycle frame as an example. The strength and the rigidity calculated by FEM are used as the evaluation functions for the structural performances. The Kansei performances such as individual and elegance are evaluated by the Semantic Differentials technique and quantified. The sizes of the cross sections at both ends of the main tubes are defined as the design variables for optimization. By using the response surfaces between the design variables and the performances obtained, the road-bicycle frame is optimized under various objectives and constraints conditions with the Sequential Quadrilateral Programming method. The calculated optimal designs and Pareto optimal designs are demonstrated to verify the effectiveness of this solution for the design with the structural and Kansei performances.
