Design is an intellectual activity involving the generation and application of hypotheses. While unprecedented and novel hypotheses can lead to creative solutions that benefit society, they can cause serious damage if they contain errors. Therefore, the designer needs to correctly grasp the hypothesis in the design process and manage it appropriately. However, in complex and diverse design thinking activities, it is not easy for designers to always grasp the hypothesis correctly under limited cognitive resources. This paper aims to support designers in efficiently grasping and managing their hypotheses correctly during the design stage. To achieve this aim, this paper identified the concepts that designers consider during the design process by referring to prior research and proposed a new typology of design hypothesis. The practical meaning of the proposed typology was confirmed by an exemplification of a design case of the Roppongi revolving door. This research is expected to contribute to the designers capturing and managing design hypotheses.
