2-D numerical simulation of the flames propagating through a periodic array of cylindrical obstacles with a diameter of 0.12 mm was performed to investigate the quenching phenomena of laminar hydrogen-air flames by a metal-mesh flame arrester. The reactive Navier-Stokes equations with the detailed chemistry were solved by using the OpenFOAM. The critical obstacle spacing, L*, was determined for three equivalence ratios, 0.4, 1.0 and 1.6. We have identified three regimes that characterized the interaction between the flames and the obstacles. The near critical regime with the obstacle spacing L ≈ L* is of particular interest and showed that reestablishment of a propagating flame can occur downstream even when the flame is locally quenched near the obstacles.
