We have tried a direct measurement of drag force due to synthetic polymers in a flow by using a scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Methoxy polyethyleneglycol thiol (mPEG-SH) was attached to a probe of a cantilever of the SPM, and the cantilever was immersed in a flow of glycerol solutions and of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) solutions. The mPEG-SH bonded cantilever detected extra force that was not detected by a naked cantilever. We considered the extra force was due to polymer-polymer and polymer-fluids interaction in the flow. We predict polymer deformation in the flow, and calculated a drag force due to the deformed polymers. The calculated force was compared with the force measured by an experiment, and those values were reasonably close.
