Flows around a circular cylinder moving though a viscoelastic wormlike micellar fluid are visualized by using the sensitive-tint method that can be used for the detection of weak birefringence induced by the flow. The formation of a Mach cone around a circular cylinder can be detected by placing a sensitive-tint plate in between a crossed polarizer and analyzer. It is found that the circular cylinder influences the flow in an area close to itself, as well as in the region spreading far downstream within the Mach cone. The orientation map of the wormlike micelles can be also estimated based on the interference colors of the images observed with a sensitive-tint plate at various angles.
