In order to establish a supersonic/hypersonic ground test facility for clarifying aerodynamic characteristics of Japan's prospective fully reusable space transportation system, advantages of Ludwieg tubes are described. Design points of a Ludwieg tube are proposed for up to Mach 6 on the basis of quasi-one-dimensional flow analysis. Its primary components, such as high pressure tubes and a high speed opening valve, are being produced and assembled. A six-component internal balance for measuring aerodynamic forces and moments is introduced and being calibrated.
