We have developed a design method using three-dimensional elastic-plastic analysis for a layered magnetic disk. To verify this design method, we analyzed a layered disk with or without a thin soft film. The load zone in this analysis is on the upper surface of the disk, which is subjected to a nominal load, a shear load, or a conbination of both. The analysis found that a disk including a soft film yields when the nominal load is larger than 10 nN/nm^2 or when the conbined nominal and shear load is larger than 14 nN/nm^2. In this case, the yielded layers are the upper layer (i.e., overcoat) and the soft film. However, the disk without a soft film yields in the overcoat only under the same load conditions. It was also found that when the soft film yields, the directions of load are a conbination of the nominal and shear directions and the nominal direction. These numerical results agreed with those from a previous fast scratch test and thus verify the design method.
