The rail with the diagonal joint is effective for decreasing noise during a wheel tread passes through the joint because of smooth change of the contact point. Therefore, the rail joint is considered as next generation rail with high environmental performance. On the other hand, the mechanism of stress aroused when change the contact point on the joint is not sufficiently studied. It is necessary to take a survey of stress that applied to a diagonal rail joint for estimating rail wear and fatigue. In this study, fundamental analysis according to the simple modeling with Hertz theory of elastic contact is performed. Fundamental characteristics of applied stress to the rail are obtained by numerical simulation with contact ellipse calculation.
