This report has two contents. One is a short history on the Class 1070 No.1080 British-made tank engine and another is significance of technology history of this engine. In 1901, this locomotive was constructed at Dubs and Company(Dubs) in Glasgow for Japanese Government Railway(J.G.R.) as tender locomotive in Meiji era. For the purpose of urban and rural train service, these tender locomotives were remodeled into tank engines at railway works of Japanese Ministry of Railway (J.M.R). The No.1080 tank engine was remodeled at Hamamatsu works in 1926, but this was discontinued its train operation and was transferred to the Akatani mine railway of Nittetsu Mining Co. at Niigata Prefecture in 1940. As this mine railway was discontinued its operation in 1957, it was transferred to the Hanezuru mine railway of Nittetsu Mining Co. at Tochigi Prefecture. In 1979, this tank engine was used as its last operation for goods train and this mine was closed its business in 1991. In 2009, West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) preserved this engine at Umekoji Locomotive Museum in Kyoto. It is thought that this engine has a historic value of technology and is equal to a candidate for Mechanical Engineering Heritage of JSME.
